University of Kent Student Review:
I switched to using a reusable razor about 2 years ago and I would literally never go back! It’s so much cheaper, the blades are sharper, the shave is closer, it looks nicer and each blade lasts so much longer than plastic heads do, not to mention you can switch between each side of the blade between strokes which means you get more hair off with each wash of your razor (it’s the little things). Available at most sustainability online and in-store shops.
For £24.99, Shoreline Shaving offers with its Safety Razor, 5 double-edge razor blades, a drawstring hessian travel bag and a user manual to help fit blades. Their blades are made by Shark and fit all standard double-edge safety razors. For every Coral Collection razor sold, Shoreline Shaving donate a portion of their profit to the protection of the world’s coral reef ecosystems. For another alternative, All Plastic Free’s Safety razor is made of bamboo and uses standard replaceable razor blades for a close shave.

University of Kent Student Review:
This is a refillable, 0-waste product which I have been using for 3 years. Due to the product being parabens and sulphate-free, its kinder to the planet and yourself. The conditioner goes far on your hair, so you don’t need loads. I would say that it did seem to have a slight drying effect when I had long bleached blonde hair, but since going back to my natural colour my hair has loved the conditioner, is healthy and not at all dry! Unboxed in Canterbury is a great place for refilling your bottle when its empty as they stock a few of the different scents. Most organic 0-waste shops will also stock it. I use the coconut conditioner.

Since this event, Stuff has gone from strength to strength, items are regularly donated to the scheme with the current total of donations at the time of writing being 1.76 tonnes, equivalent to the weight of a giraffe! We have also provided 0.20 tonnes back to you. Our store is run by a group of dedicated student volunteers which we couldn’t be more grateful for and hope that Stuff continues to grow in its popularity and helpfulness.

University stores tend to keep the higher quality items due to the types of customers they can attract.
Each bag that you donate will provide the BHF with around £14 once sold within a shop and so the value that can be created is amazing. That being said in the 2018/2019 academic year donations from the University totalled 3,861 bags weighing 28.89 tonnes, a 16.82% increase from the previous year, with the incredible value of £54,054!!
100 bags could help find a cure by funding one of the BHF young scientists for seven days. They currently provide the salaries for around 500 post-doctoral scientists who work in research team’s right across the UK on projects to better understand how to diagnose, prevent, treat and cure heart disease. This shows how much your donations can have such an impact to the charity and its work.

Once the bins have been emptied, the vehicle goes to a transfer site, here the glass recycling is removed from the vehicle and added into a larger transportation truck to then transport the waste to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). So once the waste is placed into the larger transportation truck it is mixed in with waste from other organisations.
Our mixed recycling is taken to Crayford Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) where it goes through a conveyor belt system which separates items by magnets, air and vibration first of all and then is hand sorted. All items are cleaned and then are bailed in their material types of then be sold within the industry to create new products from these recycled materials. Glass is broken into different sized chippings so that it can be used in a variety of ways even including into glass again. Here is the link to a video of a Viridor MRF facility where glass is processed at. I also think that this video is also a really good way of explaining the process that the glass goes through.
In our University of Kent Waste Strategy 2018-2021 our target is to increase the reuse rather than the recycling, as we are aiming to work in line with the waste hierarchy of prevention, prepare for reuse, recycling, other recovery and lastly disposal. Each external euro bin has a barcode style chip attached which allows the waste vehicle to connect the waste weight of the bin to the location, which is then used to provide the waste weight for every external euro bin on campus. This is essential for Estates to be able to determine areas where the mixed recycling has increased or decreased and so can provide us with target areas that we can work on.
